You know when a flock of parrots are nearby with the racket they make. This guy, who is in our neighbor's pecan tree, is a member of a flock of red-crowned parrots.

I am so jealous! Not only do you have parrots in your yard, but you have parrots in your yard that are probably native: Amazona viridigenalis, Red-crowned Amazons, ranging from NE Mexico to about where you live, according to some experts. Up here in Austin, we've only got introduced psittacids: Myiopsitta monachus, Monk Parakeets, from southern South America. Not quite as cool as having native ones.
It's not all paradise in tropical Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. True, we are blessed with amazing weather, barring the occassional blast of artic air in the winter. Thanks to the warm weather, we can grow an amazing array of plants, but we have to overcome shortfalls in our soil (high levels of salt and low levels of iron) and moderate amount of rain (26-27 inches).
